When I’m 65, a new season of BBC One documentaries, examines the very real concerns facing our ageing population. Benji Wilson finds out more.

It is estimated that by 2030 a quarter of the population will be over 65. By 2083, it will be one in three. A quarter of all children born today will live to see their 100th birthday. Those numbers mean that the elderly cannot continue to be invisible. In fact they will hardly be elderly at all in the word’s current sense – they will be richer, more active, more relevant and more numerous than ever before.

Helping hand for carers in crisis

A NEW service has been launched to support selfless carers in Hucknall who find themselves in crisis.

The Carers’ Crisis Prevention Scheme has been launched by Notts County Council to give reassurance and practical help in emergencies.

East Midlands Crossroads and North Notts Crossroads are providing the service at a cost of £85,000 this year.

New group for visually impaired in Plymouth

PLYMOUTH City Council has set up a separate low vision group to deal specifically with issues relating to people with sight loss.

The group has deliberately been kept separate to ensure that visual impairment issues do not get lost in wider disability-related issues.

Plymouth’s highlights:

As soon as a person is diagnosed staff at the Royal Eye Infirmary send over the paperwork to the council.
