FOUR charities were celebrating yesterday after pocketing nearly £200,000 in Health Lottery cash.

The payouts will help dementia sufferers, young carers and healthy living campaigns in Kent and Medway.

They were among the first to be awarded funds by the People’s Health Trust, which decides where Health Lottery money is most needed.

Dementia UK was awarded £60,000 for an “Admiral Nurse” to support 100 families over the next year.

The charity’s Jacqui Wharrad said: “Admiral Nurses are a lifeline to those affected by this distressing condition.”

Funding of £44,069 went to the School Food Trust to help teenagers set up healthy cooking clubs.

And £43,357 was given to Sustrans’ active travel champions, working to increase people’s levels of physical activity.

Carers First in Kent, left, which supports adult and young carers, received £46,801.

Pete Turner, of Carers First, said: “We are very excited by the opportunity to provide services we know will impact positively on carers and their families.”
