Action needed on training for dementia carers

BBC Inside Out examines the weaknesses in the quality of training and care on offer to people with dementia in care homes and hospitals.

This week, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) published its inspection report, Cracks in the Pathway, which found dementia care is variable in some care homes and hospitals in England.

The quality of care for people with dementia is too often ‘unacceptable’ according to the CQC’s chief inspector of adult services, Andrea Sutcliffe.

A Norwich-based art group for people living with mental ill-health is holding an exhibition at The Forum in the city from tomorrow.

The Well Artists – exhibition at The Forum October 12-16

The Well formed in 2006 to provide support and development for artists in Norfolk living with mental distress and now has a membership of about 14 people.

I would like you to check out the following scenario.

Just imaging this. Here we have a patient who talks to the doctor, the doctor sometimes struggles to understand the patient, then the doctor contacts the mental health consultant, the mental health consultant then contacts the care coordinator, the care coordinator contacts the patient, the patient then contacts an advocate and the advocate contacts the doctor, the doctor contacts the social worker who in turn speaks to the care coordinator who then is too busy to contact the patient who in turn does not contact anyone for a long time sinking futher into relapse.
