A care home is celebrating after achieving a gold standard for the quality of its end-of-life care.

Stichell House, part of the Hospital of God in Greatham, has received prestigious commend status from the national Gold Standards Framework (GSF) in Care Homes Quality Hallmark Awards.

The status is awarded to care homes where staff have undergone extra training to improve the quality of end-of-life care they provide.

A side–effect of many commonly–used drugs appears to increase the risks of both cognitive impairment and death in older people, according to new research led by the University of East Anglia [UEA].
As part of the Medical Research Council’s Cognitive Function and Ageing Studies project, the study is the first systematic investigation into the long–term health impacts of ‘anticholinergic activity’ – a known potential side–effect of many prescription and over–the–counter drugs which affects the brain by blocking a key neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. The findings are published today by the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

The government has insisted that arrangements are in place to protect residents if troubled care homes operator Southern Cross fails.

Paul Burstow, care services minister, told the House of Commons in a question and answer session that he believed a “catastrophic failure” of Southern Cross was unlikely to occur.
