ONE in 12 children, in Gloucestershire, some as young as five, are taking on the role of caring for a family member or friend who has a disability or illness. Here, carer OWEN KNIGHT, from Ashchurch, near Tewkesbury, writes about how too many of them are unrecognised… I AM 14 years old and currently studying for my GCSEs.

JUDGES from Heart of England in Bloom were in Coventry on Wednesday to consider the city’s entry into this year’s competition.

Mike Garwood and Nicola Clarke were shown several sites as part of the city’s entry in the regional Large City category.

Coventry is up against rival cities Wolverhampton and Birmingham for the regional prize.

Lottery cash secures future for East Lancashire charities

A CHARITY which supports carers has seen its future secured after it won a £434,000 grant from the lottery.

Blackburn with Darwen Carers Service Limited will spend the cash on a series of projects to support the hundreds of people who are unpaid carers.

Sam Morris, chief executive, said activities will include confidence and self-esteem schemes as well as training, aimed at helping carers to learn coping strategies such as relaxation techniques, stress management, healthy lifestyle interventions and access to holistic therapies and massage.
