Fire Service Lends Support To Cambridgeshire Carers
This Carers Week (18-24 June) Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) is reaching out to local carers and reminding them that help is available to keep them, and the people they care for, safe from fire.
Fire safety is yet another worry on an ever-growing list for those with the extra responsibility of looking after an elderly relative, sick friend or a disabled family member.
A recent survey showed that more than half of the few people who had tested their smoke alarm for someone else had done so for an older family member*. But there are many other issues a carer must think about – from the extra time it takes for people with difficulty moving to escape a fire in the home, to the added risks of flammable equipment such as oxygen cylinders.
Cash strapped councils strip £900m from elderly care
Elderly and disabled care budgets have been slashed by £900 million this year alone as local councils struggle to balance the books, social services chiefs have disclosed.
Almost £2 billion less is now being spent on care for vulnerable older or disabled people than just two years ago as nationwide cuts to reduce the deficit take effect.
Social services chiefs said the figures showed there was now a “desperate need” for politicians of all political parties urgently to agree a solution to the looming crisis in care for the elderly to cope with Britain’s ageing population.

Guests mingle with royalty as part of Diamond Jubilee celebrations
The Royal estate at Sandringham was blessed with a rare blue sky and sunshine as the Queen hosted a garden party yesterday.
Thousands of guests from Norfolk and Suffolk were invited to the exclusive event to mark part of the official Diamond Jubilee celebrations – and they were not disappointed.
From the daintiest of dainty cakes served by students from Norfolk, to the pomp of the Royal Marines’ Band at the end of the day, the afternoon was a resounding success.
The Queen, wearing an apricot coat, dress and matching hat, looked happy and relaxed as she chatted to a selected few of the 3,500 guests. The Duke of York, representing his father who was unable to attend, also put people at their ease as he conducted a walkabout.
