Decision on Hull carers service to be reviewed
Carers in Hull face an uncertain future
A DECISION to award a new £1.5 million contract providing support services for carers in Hull is to be reviewed.
The city council announced in June it was extending its current contract with the Carers’ Centre charity for another two months after concerns were raised over the tendering process.
Now scrutiny councillors have agreed to a call-in request over the move to award the contract to another provider.
It means the decision will have to be reconsidered by corporate director Trish Dalby, who was given delegated responsibility by the council’s cabinet to award the three-year contract.
The issue could also go back to the cabinet if council leader Councillor Steve Brady agrees.
Ms Dalby opted to award the contract to the City Healthcare Partnership (CHP), a new community interest company set up two years ago as offshoot of the city’s NHS primary care trust.

A CARE home in Sheffield is promoting a sunny, green-fingered approach to life as it takes part in a national survey on dementia care.
Springwood Residential Home, on Herries Road, is part of a chain of 11 homes operated across the city by charitable organisation SheffCare.
The home, which has a number of residents living with dementia, has been chosen by environmental design expert Dr Garuth Chalfont to participate in research into the ways connections to the natural world can benefit residents with dementia.
MP Toby Perkins backs support for carers
CHESTERFIELD MP Toby Perkins is calling on GPs to register anyone who takes on a significant care role for a member of their family.

Medical professionals’ focus on the needs of the patient has often meant that the needs of those who care for them have gone unnoticed.
Mr Perkins met with staff and volunteers at the Derbyshire Carers Centre on West Bars to mark National Carers Week. He heard from the Centre’s staff and volunteers about pressures many carers face and their concern that people are struggling to cope alone.
In Derbyshire there are over 110,000 people who take on full-time care responsibilities, but just 5,000 are registered as carers.
