A CARERS charity has lost its fight to win a major £1.5 million contract.

Carers’ Centre Hull in Prospect Street, city centre, handed over a petition to try to save the centre yesterday, just hours before the City Heath Care Partnership (CHCP) was confirmed as the successful bidder.

Despite more than 2,000 backing their plight, Hull City Council announced the contract decision had been upheld.

A joint statement issued by the council and NHS Hull Clinical Commissioning Group, which funds the support service, said: “Against the background of the significant changes within the NHS, it was decided that a Hull City Council-led procurement exercise would be a more stable and preferred option.

“A number of funding streams have been brought together to be able to provide a much wider range of services.

Virgin could take on Devon children care contract

Virgin Care has been named as preferred bidder to run a £130m contract for children’s services in Devon.

The company, which runs children’s services in Surrey, could take over in March 2013 for three years.

It beat off competition from Devon Partnership Trust with Barnado’s, Young Devon and Interserve and Serco with Cornwall Partnership Trust.

Services are currently delivered by about 1,100 staff employed by NHS Devon and Devon County Council.

‘Clinical excellence paramount’

The NHS said appointing a single organisation to run all the services across the county would offer the best and most integrated care.

On Wednesday, the Government finally published its Social Care White Paper.

Age UK warmly welcomes the Government’s plans to reform the care system, although we are disappointed the Government did not set out how the changes will be funded and delayed the decision to the Comprehensive Spending Review expected next year.

If funding is forthcoming, today’s announcement is welcome news for the millions of care users now and in the future, and is something Age UK has been working towards for many years, most recently through our Care in Crisis campaign.

The main proposals for reform are listed below:

Improving access to social care

Introduction of a national eligibility criteria ensuring minimum level of support and continuity of care, portable between local authority areas.
