A NEW watchdog is being launched to monitor health and social care in Staffordshire.
Healthwatch Staffordshire will investigate the views of patients and social care service users from April as part of national changes.
The new organisation will have statutory powers to enter providers’ premises to see at first hand how services are being delivered. Healthwatch Staffordshire will be able to recommend improvements and providers will have to respond to those recommendations.

Hotel boss raising money for MS charity in memory of uncle

A hotel manager has dedicated a year of fund raisers to a charity in memory of her uncle.
Katie Savage, 32, was appointed manager of Langshott Manor, in Ladbroke Road, Horley, last September and has taken the new year as an opportunity to make the MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Society the hotel’s ‘charity of the year’.
This means every fund raising event that takes place at the hotel in 2013 will raise money for that charity.
Katie said the cause was very close to her heart. “My uncle suffered from the disease from the age of 28 and sadly passed away at the age of 44 leaving behind two young sons.”

Council bosses have been urged to keep care funds flowing for thousands of vulnerable elderly people – after they backed spending £2.5m on recruiting a new volunteer army.
Norfolk County Council hopes to find helpers to knock on doors and tell people aged over 75 about the care services they are entitled to receive.
This will include helping people access lunch clubs, befriending services, short breaks and welfare benefit advice.
