They are the places we want to feel safe and secure in our twilight years.

But news that leading care home company Southern Cross is facing a dire financial crisis has sounded the alarm that the whole system is teetering on the edge.

And that is something which should alarm every generation whether it is mum, dad, grandad, grandma or child.

 The Cytosponge costs a fraction of traditional methods of detecting oesophageal cancer cells
A new, cheap, less-invasive way to test for oesophageal cancer has won £50,000 as one of the first of the Department of Health’s innovations awards winners.

Cytosponge, a test for oesophageal cancer costing £25 compared to the £600 of a traditional endoscopy, came second in the DoH’s Innovation Challenge.
