Cancer discovery offers hope of tackling spread of disease

Cancer Research UK said the study provided fresh understanding of ways to stop cancer spreading.

Scientists have discovered how cancerous cells can “elbow” their way out of tumours, offering clues for new drugs to prevent cancers spreading.

They say they have identified a protein called JAK which helps cancerous cells generate the force needed to move.

Writing in Cancer Cell, they say the cells contract like muscle to force their way out and around the body.

Cancer Research UK said the study provided fresh understanding of ways to stop cancer spreading.

Matthew James explains how the new bionic hand works

A Formula One fan has had his wish of a new bionic hand fulfilled after a plucky letter to boss of the Mercedes GP Petronas team, Ross Brawn.

Matthew James, a 14 year old from Wokingham in Berkshire, was born without a left hand.

He was fitted with a bionic version which he described as “like a claw”.

Atos practices concerning welfare and disability assessment have come under intense criticism.

Twelve doctors employed by the firm that is paid £100m a year to assess people claiming disability benefit are under investigation by the General Medical Council over allegations of improper conduct. The doctors, who work for Atos Healthcare, a French-owned company recently criticised by MPs for its practices, face being struck off if they are found not to have put the care of patients first.
