Half-empty Heversham House care home could be forced to close

A CARE home at the heart of a South Lakeland community is under threat of closure.

A change in social services policy has meant only five out of the 12 beds at Heversham House are full, and the care home will struggle to see out the rest of the year unless more residents move in.

The policy change, which sees more elderly people being looked after in their own home rather than a care home, has not only affected Heversham House.

A voice recognised by golf enthusiasts all over the globe graced a Norwich golf club last week in the name of charity.

BBC golf commentator Peter Alliss visited Eaton Golf Club on Thursday for its captains’ charity golf day in aid of The Peter Alliss Powered Wheelchair Crusade.

George Makey MBE, the uncle of Eaton Golf Club’s ladies captain, Debbie Halliday, started an initiative to raise money for powered wheelchairs for disabled children in 1975. Mr Alliss has been involved with the charity since the end of the 1970s.

NEW YORK, Aug. 15 (UPI) — Having one child with autism increases the risk of siblings having autism at a rate higher than previously thought, U.S. researchers suggest.

Researchers at the University of California, Davis, MIND Institute, found 19 percent of younger siblings of children with autism spectrum disorder developed autism — a rate significantly higher than that of the general population — and if there were two children with autism spectrum disorder in the family, the risk of the third sibling developing autism spectrum disorder increased to more than 32 percent.
