Manchester cuts: Millions slashed from adults budget

Support for adults could be reduced by £8m over two years

The council is reducing funding for meals on wheels and lunch clubs

Millions of pounds of council funding which helps some of Manchester’s most vulnerable people is set to be cut.

Councillors will consider savings, described as “difficult decisions”, which will affect services from help for battered wives to meals-on-wheels.

Nearly 60 voluntary groups will lose all or part of their grants as the council seeks to cut £2m from the sector.

Winter fuel poverty could hit Norfolk harder than other parts of the country, an Age UK Norfolk representative has warned.

Linda Gill, the charity’s development manager, said the county had a higher than average elderly population receiving the winter fuel payment struggling to meet the increasing cost of fuel to keep their homes warm during the cold winter months.

Scheme to help people choose paid carers

Clients and their families will be able to search a national website www.supportwithconfidence.co.uk to find local providers who have been approved under the scheme to find one that matches their requirements.

A scheme has been launched to help people who need support at home to choose from good carers.

West Berkshire Council has introduced Support With Confidence designed to give the elderly and vulnerable in the community – and their families – greater peace of mind.

Caring organisations listed under the scheme are required to have passed the necessary background checks and carried out appropriate training.
