Carer pair brave snow in 10-mile hike to patients

TWO dedicated carers braved blizzardlike weather conditions and walked for more than 10 miles to provide care for their most vulnerable patients.

Jilly Sharpe, 25, and Marlene Pearson, 58, both from Newhall, got up at 5am last Sunday to be confronted with freezing temperatures and at least six inches of snow, which meant they couldn’t get their cars off their driveways.

Undaunted, the carers — who work for Burton-based Radis Care — put on their walking boots and set out to Stapenhill for their first patient visit.

They then walked into Burton and on to Stretton before making their final call in Horninglow.

Norfolk County Council is expected to vote in favour of the next £3.5m cut from the service, with centre charges increasing, transport arrangements changing and staff levels being cut.

But Monday’s decision will be another attempt to trim the service before tackling the future of each of the council’s 23 centres.

No announcements on these buildings, which provide care and support for 1,700 people, are expected until 2013.

Norfolk’s centres will be grouped into different areas based on location and examined, with no threat of a blanket closure on the horizon yet.

Care for elderly ‘let down by fragmented system’

MPs warned though that the future of social care should not be “dominated by a debate about the technical details of funding”.

Older people are being let down by a social care system in which they are “passed like a parcel” between services, a committee of MPs has said.

The Commons health select committee wants local areas in England to deliver “joined-up” care, health and housing.

Funding pressures were reducing older people’s quality of life, MPs added.
