A COUNCIL has been accused of letting down the older generation after hundreds of people saw an increase in the amount they contribute towards their care costs.

In November last year, Darlington Borough Council changed the way it assessed people’s ability to pay for their care.

A total of 326 people across the borough were affected by the change.

Carers of loved ones with dementia have spoken out about the difficulties they face – ahead of a roadshow visiting Scunthorpe for the first time.

With more than 2,000 people estimated to be living with dementia in North Lincolnshire, the Alzheimer’s Society’s roadshow will provide much-needed information and advice about the condition.

Forget about ‘social care pot of gold’

There will be no “pot of gold” to answer the prayers of councils struggling to look after the elderly, according to social care chiefs.

Ministers have promised to reform the system amid signs local authorities are struggling to keep pace with demand.

But Sarah Pickup, the new president of the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services, said changes in England would still be years away.
