Ashover Car and Bike Show raising money for local charities

Local charities are set to benefit after hundreds of classic cars and bikes turned up at the picturesque Ashover Show Ground, near Chesterfield, on Sunday for a new all-day rally.
Organised jointly by the Rotary Clubs of Chesterfield, Chesterfield Scarsdale, Clay Cross and Matlock the local charities to benefit will be McMillan Nurses, Derbyshire Young Carers, Pathways of Chesterfield for homeless people, Kidney Research and other Rotary charities.

The event was attended by enthusiasts and spectators from all over the region and looks like being an annual event with the next show already booked for Sunday 29 July 2012.

The winner of the show, as voted for by the entrants, was Grant Draper of Rowsley in his mint condition 1967 VW 13 window split Siren Deluxe.

Grant Draper, who last year had eight best in show awards at dedicated VW Shows, said: “This is the first time I gave been to an open Classic Car Show and feel honoured to be selected by other entrants as the winner as there are so many beautiful cars on show.”

The winning bike was owned by David Hurst of Renishaw with his Burgandy Red 1200cc Honda Goldwing Interstate which was imported and first registerd in 1986. He said: “I am over the moon with this win and just so delighted.”

After some difficulty, due to the quality of the entrants, the Presidents Choice was a 750 cc 1934 Austin 7 Pickup owned by Keith Rudge of Alvaston, Derby, in county cream over brown. Keith Rudge said: “It is wonderful that the Ashover Classic Car show is back and the Rotarians have organised a fabulous event and we will be back next year.”

The show was held on a beautiful sunny day, which encouraged the crowds to turn out for the return of a Classic Car Show at a popular venue following a number of years absence.

There was entertainment in the main event arena including performances by Direction Theatre Arts and Ashover Brass Band. There was also a side show with Autojumble and an Art and Craft Fair plus refreshments and a licensed bar.

The main sponsor of the event was Autoworld, along with J & P Catering, CRC Leisure, Stuart Bradley Jewellers, and Castle Graphics.
