Carer’s Assessments – know your rights
February 14, 2013
Caring for someone who has additional needs due to their age, illness or disability is a vey difficult job.
The law says that if you provide a ‘substantial’ amount of care to someone on a ‘regular’ basis you have a freestanding right to a carer’s assessment. This applies to carers of any age who provide care to adults or disabled children.
In addition, carers should be included and consulted during the care assessments of the person that they look after.
If you feel you need extra help to support you in your caring role you should contact your local social services and ask for an assessment of your needs as a carer.
If you have been refused a carer’s assessment or you are unhappy with the outcome of an assessment we can review it for you and advise on whether it can be challenged.
If you would like to discuss your case further please contact our dedicated community care team on 0151 282 1700. Alternatively, complete our online enquiry form or email Corine Hims, head of department at corinehims@qualitysolicitors.com.
