City MP welcomes new support measures for carers
City carers will get more support in their roles thanks to measures announced in the Queen’s Speech.
A Care Bill, recognising the rights of carers, will make it easier for them to access support services from their local authority.
The announcement was welcomed by MP for Milton Keynes South, Iain Stewart.
He said: “I have been privileged to meet carers in the city and joined them at Frosts Garden Centre when they had some respite from their caring responsibilities. They perform an emotionally and physically demanding job caring for those they love, and I often wonder who cares for the carer.”
“I am pleased with this Bill because of the enhanced rights that it will give to carers in Milton Keynes. I know that there will be details that will need clarifying once this Bill comes before Parliament and I plan to work closely with Carers MK to ensure that these are properly addressed.”
Carers MK chief executive Stephen Archibald said: “We welcome The Care and Support Bill, particularly the new duties regarding information and advice and preventative services to help carers plan for the future. It is also good to see the Bill will provide for whole family assessments and greater co-operation between children’s and adult services.”
