Description

The Knitted Christmas Tree is over 15 feet high, has over 4,000 knitted leaves, nearly 2,000 knitted decorations and the tub, bark, grass, parcels and star are all knitted.

It was made to raise funds in support of John Grooms Court in Norwich.

John Grooms Court is run by the charity Livability and provides accommodation for 20 physically disabled young adults. Just before last Christmas their lift broke down and seven residents were stranded upstairs for over a week.

Livability are running a major fundraising campaign for a second lift and five more flatlets. The Friends of John Grooms Court are supporting the campaign with the construction of this 15 foot tall Christmas Tree.

The original idea was to enter a tree in a local Christmas Tree Festival but how would we make ours different? At the same time Mandy, one of the residents of John Grooms, was learning to knit and the two ideas came together…. and the tree grew!

The wooden framework was designed by Ann Meijer whose daughter Catherine lives in John Grooms Court. Knitters in the community were then asked to knit green squares for leaves and colourful tree decorations and their response has been tremendous.

An army of knitters from across Norfolk and beyond have send us over 4600 leaves and nearly 2000 decorations and we received over £1700 in donations before the tree went on display.
