Essex: Bid for better care for gay, lesbian and bi-sexuals

A guide on providing better care for terminally ill gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender patients has been published.

Bridget Moss, who is also education director at St Helena Hospice, Colchester, lead a year-long study into end-of-life care for LGBT people.

Speaking to focus groups of terminal patients and their carers, she found many felt let down by their treatment.

Many carers often assumed their patients were heterosexual and paid no attention to their specific needs.

A SERIOUSLY disabled man was left trapped and helpless in the back of a locked van by his carer and had to be rescued by two passing policemen.

William Yates’s shocked family later learned that cruel John Hart had landed the job despite two convictions for assault.

Hart, 29, pushed terrified William into the footwell of the van, then pulled the front passenger seat over his head.

It meant 58-year-old William was unable to escape or open the vehicle from inside.

Teenagers are often chastised for “binge drinking”, but it is pensioners that we should worry about, according to Joan Bakewell.

The broadcaster, who was appointed as a voice for older people by Gordon Brown, claims that there is a hidden alcohol problem among senior citizens. So serious does she consider the situation that she is making a documentary about it for Panorama.

“People over 65 in this country are turning out to have drink-related problems,” Baroness Bakewell tells Mandrake at a party to celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Oldie magazine, at Simpson’s-in-the-Strand.
