Young Norfolk carers interview JLS star Oritse Williams

Five young Norfolk carers who interviewed Oritse Williams from JLS before the pop band’s recent Carrow Road concert have put a video of their chat with him on YouTube.

The youngsters have lost carer services because of cuts to council funding and are campaigning to try and save some of the services, as part of National Carers Week.

The issue is close to the pop star’s heart as he cared for his mother from the age of 12, when she was diagnosed with MS.

He said: “You almost don’t know that you are a young carer because you just do what you are supposed to do to look after, in my case, my mother.

“Of course it makes people frustrated and it’s very taxing, sometimes the person you are caring for feels like you are spending your whole life caring for them when you should be doing your own thing.

“But such is life and you just have to adjust to whatever situation or scenario you are in and that’s what I did.”

The media project is supported by the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Norwich and District Lions and is also holding a family fun day at the UEA on Saturday, June 25.

Between midday and 4pm young carers, carers and people with MS will have the chance to try out activities such as street dance, wall climbing, five-a-side football and free treatments from students from the UEA’s Beauty Therapy School.

Young Carers, family members and people with MS and their families can contact the MS Society if they want to take part by emailing mscentre@gmail.com or calling 01603 438900.

What a wonderful video to watch. I hope these young carers get their funding back.
How can services be taken away from them?
