Cuts to Norfolk adult social care, which critics say could increase homelessness, agreed – by narrowest of margins.

Millions of pounds of cuts, including for spending on independent living for young and old, have been backed by councillors – by the narrowest of margins.

The decision to cut more than £11m, including more than £5m from funding for services which support vulnerable people, was today agreed by Norfolk County Council’s adult social care committee.

But an attempt by opposition councillors to stop cuts to housing support was only blocked thanks to the casting vote of Conservative chairman Bill Borrett.

Free bus rides help Norwich Foodbank deliver service

Norwich Foodbank has teamed up with Bus operator First Eastern Counties to make sure that people are able to pick up their emergency three-day food parcels with a free bus ride.


People who need to use foodbanks sometimes walk long distances with heavy shopping bags as they can’t afford public transport.

To address the issue, First Bus has developed a partnership with foodbank national charity the Trussell Trust, which already operates in the Midlands and Essex.

Now First Eastern Counties has linked up with Norwich Foodbank to offer bus journey vouchers, which can be used by people needing help from the foodbank and the volunteers who work there.

Who cares for the carers?

As a constituency MP I meet a whole array of people who need my help and support: a woman caring for her husband who has dementia, or a father with his autistic child. They form part of a silent army of carers, who do what they do because they love the person they care for. Many don’t even see themselves as carers.

With an ageing population, the demands on our health and care system are growing. The incredible job that these unpaid carers do, supplementing services and giving their own time to provide much-needed support, will only become more important. But who is caring for the carers?
