Carer Pat Onions may be blind but still is a carer for her husband

SHE is one of an estimated 759,000 people in Scotland caring for a loved one who is elderly, ill or disabled, with the figure set to rise to at least one million by 2017.

HAVING suffered the sudden and devastating loss of her sight in her 30s, Pat Onions could have faced a very limited future.

But she decided otherwise. At 62 and registered blind, Pat not only lives a completely independent life, she is a full-time carer for her 66-year-old husband David, who broke his back 30 years ago while serving in the Royal Navy.

She is one of an estimated 759,000 people in Scotland caring for a loved one who is elderly, ill or disabled, with the figure set to rise to at least one million by 2017.

But Pat’s dedication is all the more remarkable because of her own disability, cruelly inflicted in an instant more than 30 years ago when she was living in Berlin with her first husband.
