People with learning difficulties and their carers not welcome at Butlins

Butlin’s ought to think again

BUTLIN’S should find some way to open their doors to a party of Sheffield people with learning disabilities, and their carers, who have been told they are not welcome at their Skegness resort.

The official reason is that the holiday company does not welcome large groups of adults as they intimidate family parties at their camps. But there is surely a difference between the Sheffield party, which includes a 59-year-old Down’s Syndrome sufferer, and a party of hell-raisers on a stag night.

Good to see unpaid carers receiving recognition!

The Carer’s Award

(PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS AWARD WILL BE JUDGED ON WRITTEN SUBMISSIONS ONLY)

The award will be given to an unpaid carer who in the opinion of the judges can demonstrate commitment and perseverance in the care they give. Six million people a year provide unpaid care to either a relative, friend or child who is ill, frail or disabled. This award seeks to acknowledge and celebrate the dedication that carers give to those they care for and the incredible contribution they make.

Judge ‘troubled’ by care ruling

Judge ‘troubled’ by care ruling

PA

A leading judge today said she was “troubled” by the implications of a Supreme Court decision which campaigners say could lead to the elderly being “warehoused” at home “without regard to their quality of life”.

Supreme Court justice Lady Hale – a member of the five-strong judges’ panel which made the ruling – told of her fears that older people “might be left lying in faeces” because local authorities would be entitled to withdraw help.

Campaigning charity Age UK described the ruling as “shameful” and suggested that it could lead to the infirm being forced to “sleep in their own urine”.
