Four residential centres for people with multiple sclerosis have been saved from closure, a charity says.

The sale of the centres in York, Surrey, Warwickshire and East Lothian are almost complete, Simon Gillespie, chief executive of the MS Society said.

They were at risk of closing after the charity said it had decided to move out of directly providing respite care.

Last September, the charity’s leadership survived a motion of no confidence over the closures.

A solution to the country’s “shocking” record on multiple sclerosis (MS) care could be in the hands of patients themselves under a pioneering new project.

The MS Society has warned that the UK is one of the worst countries in Europe in which to have the neurological condition, with “patchy care”, a shortage in expert nurses and neurologists who are “stretched to the limit”.

It is launching a new register combining patient details and routine NHS information with expert clinical data to support future research and hopefully transform the delivery of drugs, care and services.

The charity was established in 1998 as a result of research conducted by Social Services, Health Authority, Local Authorities and Voluntary Organisations. This revealed a need to support unpaid carers throughout Norfolk. The We Care Appeal raises money for the Norfolk Millennium Trust for Carers, an Endowment Fund.
