£135 million for elderly care could be spent on admin, council and charities warn

Care for elderly and disabled people will be jeopardised by a £135 million gap in funding for a long-awaited overhaul of the system, an alliance of council leaders, care chiefs and charities is warning.

Details in the fine print of the Coalition’s Care Bill, which is going through its final Parliamentary stages, suggest that cash transferred from the NHS to the care system will have to be used to make the reforms happen, they say.

It means that money set aside to improve social care would be diverted into bureaucracy, the councils and charities fear.

The UN International Women’s Day – Saturday 8 March 2014

“Women’s economic empowerment is a mirage if we ignore unpaid work done at home”

GENEVA (8 March 2014) – On International Women’s Day, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, Magdalena Sepúlveda, calls on States to ensure that unpaid care is better valued, supported and shared – by men and by States:

“Women’s economic empowerment is a mirage if we don’t also take into account the unpaid work they are doing in the home. In most countries, women – especially those living in poverty – work longer hours than men when unpaid work is taken into account, yet they receive lower earnings and less recognition.

Many vulnerable people denied care, says Age UK

A “catastrophic” situation is developing in England

A “catastrophic” situation is developing in England with many vulnerable elderly people being denied care, campaigners say.

An analysis by Age UK found the proportion of over-65s getting help had fallen by a third since 2005-6.

Last year, under 900,000 over-65s got help – one in 10 people in that group – compared with 15% seven years ago.

The review – based on published data – estimated at least 800,000 older people were going without vital help.

This includes council-funded help in the home with daily tasks such as washing, dressing and eating as well as care home places.
