Lack of nurses in Norfolk for dementia prompts appeal

The Wymondham Dementia Support Group has launched an appeal to get together 17,000 knitted and crocheted forget-me-nots, one for every person in Norfolk living with dementia.

The group’s organiser, Dianne Fernee, said the campaign was to highlight the lack of Admiral nurses, who are specialists in dementia.

Mrs Fernee said: “Admiral nurses are a lifeline for people with dementia, but there are only two of them serving 17,000 people, which isn’t nearly enough.

‘Relaxing’ group offers carers ‘escapism from isolation’

PEOPLE who care for loved ones with long-term illnesses have turned to art as a way of escaping their day-to-day pressures.

Providing round-the-clock care for a relative suffering with conditions like Alzheimer’s can often lead to the carer becoming isolated and ignoring their own needs.

In a bid to tackle carer loneliness and stresses, a “relaxing” art group based in Grimsby encourages the sometimes under-pressure carers to forget their worries and immerse themselves in art.

First of a new kind of care village set to open

A new care village – the first of its kind in East Anglia – is opening its doors to residents from Monday.

It’s like a fancy hotel complex with a hairdressers, bar, cafe, shop and restaurant set in landscaped gardens but it’s actually made up of 92 care flats and a dementia home.

Four council care homes built in the 1970s in Norwich are shutting and the residents transferring to Bowthorpe Care Village on the outskirts of of the city.
