GENEROUS organisers of a scarecrow weekend have handed over a large cheque to the Lynn News Young Carers’ Appeal.

Wolferton Scarecrow Festival has donated £2,000 from the successful August fundraiser.

The Lynn News is working with West Norfolk Carers’ team to raise £100,000 to give youngsters who are caring for sick relatives a break

The appeal will be helping youngsters, aged between five and 18, who look after family members suffering from physical disabilities, serious illnesses as well as mental health and substance abuse problems. Money from the campaign will be used to pay for trips out for the youngsters and transport to young carers’ groups across West Norfolk.

Staff at West Norfolk Carers’ received the cheque from the scarecrow festival organisers earlier this week.

One of the people behind the appeal is Jackie Haverson. She said: “It is nice to think that people are supporting us and getting behind the charity. It is overwhelming and a complete shock, we didn’t expect to get £2,000.”

The appeal was also boosted by £125 raised at a pamper evening organised by West Norfolk carers worker Jean Ellis and her family.

Her daughter, Mollie Bulogun, a make-up artist, completed a number of make-overs at the event.

A quiz, raffle and a number of games were also held during the event, which was held at the Lynn home of Jean’s mother, Eleanor, on Saturday.

Jean is delighted with the amount of money raised on the night.

She said: “I am very pleased with the number of ladies who attended and by the response. I asked everyone to bring a raffle prize wrapped.

“There were quite a few transformations.”

Fundraising currently stands at £7,455 but more money is needed to make a difference to youngsters and it is hoped to raise £10,000 by Christmas.

The team is planning to organise a fundraising craft fair on Saturday, December 3.

They are in the process of booking a local hall and are looking for stallholders. Stalls are due to cost £7.

If anyone would like to know more about the craft fair you can contact the team on 01553 768155.
