Carers from all over the country travelled to 10 Downing Street to meet David Cameron and talk to him about their experiences and concerns.

Mr Cameron said that the government needs to cut down on bureaucracy and said to carers “if you stopped doing what you’re doing, the consequences for the country would be disastrous.”

Damian Haywood cares for his severely disabled son Matias who has a rare genetic condition. Coming out of Downing Street, he said “A lot of us have concerns about what’s going on with regards to the commissions and the bills that are coming through parliament and it was nice to hear that the government seem to be thinking about us, they seem to be taking our needs on board and dealing with them appropriately, we hope.”

The reception on Wednesday was part of Carers Week 2011 and was sponsored by Skills for Care and Skills for Health. The theme of this year’s Carers Week is ‘The True Face of Carers’. It calls for greater recognition and support for the diverse – and often unexpected – range of people who give up their money, time and health to look after somebody else.
