Help for carers and other residents to keep warm in North Norfolk

Almost 2,000 north Norfolk households are set for a spring cut to their electricity and gas bills, having signed up for a pioneering scheme.   Across the district, 2,796 homes registered with Big Switch and Save, with 71pc expected to save money.

The scheme, run locally by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), has seen energy companies taking part in a reverse auction and submitting their lowest offers, the best of which would then be offered to all those who registered to see whether they could get a better deal.

Three companies, Sainsbury’s Energy, Scottish Power and British Gas, won in three different categories – dual fuel, electricity only, and prepayment meter customers.   Although the final figures have not been confirmed, the 71pc (1,960) of those who registered are likely to save on average £111 per year. The highest average saving would be £139 for dual fuel customers opting for online billing.   John Lee, NNDC cabinet member for environmental services, said: “A lot of hard-pressed residents of north Norfolk could soon be in for some really good news.

“Energy prices have gone through the roof recently and I am very pleased that the council has been able to find a way of reducing the burden for quite a few of them.”  Households will be contacted soon with their own offer.

They are under no obligation to switch supplier after receiving the offer.   The council is hoping to run the scheme again later in the year.
