Parts of the UK will be warmer than Madrid and Athens this weekend, just days after some areas of the country were hit with flurries of snow.
Mothering Sunday is expected to be the hottest day of the year so far, with temperatures in London and the South East reaching 70F (21C), a full 50F (10C) above average.
In a remarkable shift, it comes after a week of cold weather blown in from the North Sea which saw areas from Cumbria to Devon under a layer of snow.
Emma Corrigan, a Met Office forecaster, said the weather flows reaching the UK had shifted from east to south, pushing a warmer spell up from the continent.
“Sunday will see temperatures between 68F (20C) and 70F (21C) in the south and the midlands.
“However, northern Scotland will be much colder with Aberdeenshire barely reaching 50F (10C).”
