Windows XP

Postby wendy » 07 Mar 2014, 18:54

From Saturday 8 March people still using computers with Windows XP as the operating system will start to receive this message on their computer:

The message is a genuine notification from Microsoft regarding the upcoming end of support for Windows XP.

This means the XP operating system will continue to work but no further updates or security patches will be released.

The ‘click here’ link in the message will take users to the Microsoft Windows XP End of Support Website giving users limited advice on what XP users could do:

It is possible that scammers may try to use this period to put fake versions of this message or websites online looking to route people away from the genuine site and use this opportunity for financial gain. As we always advise view any online pop-up message with caution and check websites carefully when looking for online software updates or purchases.

If you think you need independent advice and support when looking to upgrade software on your computer the Norfolk Trusted Trader scheme has a number of members who offer IT support, advice and repairs.

There will be no more IE updates after this date and you will eventually have problems with some websites, however mozilla firefox will continue to work.

I agree Coffee, windows XP was a good one, I've got Windows 7 and there is no way on this earth I would have windows 8.
Pre XP  windows 98 was also a good one.

Thanks, Wendy.

I'm using the Windows XP platform now, as I'm typing in this message. I have a new strategy from 9th April, but rather annoyed this has been forced on me. Running a successful business nowadays requires efficient and cost-effective IT. One has to doubt Microsoft's future strategy because this will upset so many of their customers who can't afford to upgrade, as well as making cyberspace a less safe place.

Another true scare story has now emerged... involving saving Word documents as .pdf files Simple advice is don't do it! (even on a Mac!) Microsoft are well aware and their quickfix disables saving to pdf.

Would advise everyone to get all the XP updates they may not have already downloaded - for whatever reason - asap, because no-one seems to know what will happen when support is withdrawn, and perhaps it is better to plan for the worst case scenario.

I'm not anti-Microsoft, by the way... in fact I use a Windows phone driven by a securely written operating system that doesn't even need antivirus protection.
