I know a chap n his wife who have two disabled children and they use this ... the children are now teenagers.
There is a children's programme on Cbeebies, Mr Tumble, and they have children with all sorts of abilities, it is one of my great-nephew's Jake's fav programmes, he is fine thankfully - he uses it with "normal" verbal language and says hello and thankyou in Makaton. We use it on Door-to-Door as well on the school runs.
Makaton has been round quite a while, and anything that helps people communicate what they want I am all for as my dear Dad had severe aphasia (he couldn't find what words he wanted to say) as a result of his strokes -we could both be tired out just trying to find out what he wanted. As an example he wanted a new watch, that bit was easyish, but then we had to work our way along all the shops windows literally watch by watch with me pointing n him nodding his head if it was the right one -took us many trips to shops before he got the one he wanted..
If anyone wants to lnow more about it ...
