UK storms: Met Office issues 'Red Warning' for wind

Postby maureenho » 12 Feb 2014, 11:53

12 February 2014 Last updated at 11:32

Winds of up to 100mph are expected to batter west Wales and north-west England, with the Met Office issuing its first "red warning" of the winter.

The warning for 13:30 to 21:00 GMT means there is a "risk to life" and people should "avoid dangerous areas" with widespread damage expected.

Meanwhile, work is continuing to tackle flooding which is affecting much of southern England.

There are sixteen severe flood warnings in Berkshire, Surrey and Somerset.
This shows the affected areas of the red weather warning. West Wales and north-west England are the areas likely to get hit by high-speed winds, the Met Office has said.

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said the prime minister's pledge on Tuesday that money was "no object" to combat the flood problems did not amount to a "blank cheque" for tackling floods.

The Met Office said: "Winds of this strength can cause widespread structural damage, bringing down trees and also leading to loss of power supplies.

If the lorry wasn't in the photo you would think it was a river.

The big worry now is crops are ruined that we rely on.

I agree Mo, there will be shortages ans increased prices as many crops will be ruined & ground too soggy to replant when floods subside

I doubt there will be much in the way of Jersey spuds as the fields on the island are flooded there with more rain on the way - it is awful weather this afternoon, with the wind and the rain but so safe we have got off lightly - if it is like this tomorrow no knit n knatter for me - I'm staying in!

Worcester has been declared a state of emergency and schools have been shut and shop workers and factory people sent home.
There are no trains and the roads are all closed because of flooding.
They have people come to their house, who may have to stay all night.

The wind and rain is awful.

I am driving to Plymouth with Sam tomorrow morning. Not looking forward to it. It will be a 4 and a quarter hour journey in good conditions so expecting a 6 hour trip tomorrow!

Hope everyone is prepared and safe.

Love to you all

Jane, if you go over the Dartford bridge, make sure it is open.
I wish you a safe journey, and will be thinking of you.

Flood water in Worcestershire could spill over barriers for the first time, the Environment Agency warns.

I don't think the Environment Agency do enough to prevent these things turning into severe emergencies, if rivers were dredged like they use to be I don't think it would be nearly as bad as it is, the water haven't got anywhere to go now, when they dredged it would at least remove a few feet of rubbish off the river bed to allow somewhere for the water to go.

UK floods: Swans take over Worcester
Swans take over Worcester city centre as river levels rise to record-breaking levels

Flooding in Worcester has reached record levels, beating the 5.64m that the river peaked at in 2007, by 1cm.

On Thursday the flood water is expected to go over the flood barriers and further inundate the town.

It is predicted that the river will rise to 5.80m flowing over the flood defences which have been built to 5.70m.

The only creatures enjoying this current weather are local swans which now have the run of the town.

The only way into the city from the south is over the bridge in a double decker bus.
Nothing else can get through because of the floods.
The water is up to the top of the bridge, so how long the bridge will hold is any ones guess.
