A ‘Carer’s Evidence Summit’

Postby wendy » 27 May 2014, 11:07

An invitation from Neil Churchill, Director of Patient Experience, NHS England and
Dr Maureen Baker, Chair of Council RCGP
Carers are a hugely important asset to the NHS. However, too often carers do not receive the recognition and support that they need and deserve from the NHS. We need to do more to help identify, support and recognise their vital roles. Helping carers to provide better care and to stay well themselves will contribute to better lives for those needing care and more effective use of NHS resources. One of the ways we are seeking to help carers is to provide better commissioning support, so that the needs of carers are built into the design of health and care services.
To help us do this, we would like to invite you to attend one of the four regional Evidence Summits around the country. The purpose of the summits is to identify and share local and regional examples of what is working well and what makes a positive difference to carers’ health and wellbeing. Case studies will be used to create principles of good practice for the commissioning of services, which will be published in autumn 2014.
To register for these events, please click on your chosen date and location:
York: 1 July 2014
Leicester: 3 July 2014
London: 8 July 2014
Taunton: 10 July 2014
Please note that places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Holding these Carers Evidence Summits is part of the work NHS England and the RCGP have committed to do. The RCGP as part of its ‘Supporting Carers in General Practice’ Programme (SCGP) and NHS England as part of its ‘Commitment to Carers’ (published May 2014) following consultation with carers, charities and partner organisations identifies eight priorities and 37 commitments that will help the NHS to deliver the care and support carers have said they need.
The Evidence Summits will be highly interactive and invited delegates will be asked to work together in facilitated workshops to agree the principles of commissioning that will be developed after the events. You have a valuable contribution to make at these summits, which will help us to make a genuine improvement to the lives of all carers.
We very much look forward to working alongside you.
With best wishes

‘Carer’s Evidence Summit’ BRIEFING

1st July: Race Course, York

3rd July: NSPCC Training Centre, Leicester

8th July: RCGP, 30 Euston Square, London

10th July: Taunton Conference Centre

Join us at the start of our journey to take forward our Commitment to Carers.

The Evidence Summits:

These four regional workshop events will be held in different areas to ensure engagement across the country and will be chaired by Dame Phillipa Russell. They are part of the work which NHS England and the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) have committed to do - NHS

England as part of the ‘Commitment to Carers’ (published May 2014) and RCGP as part of its ‘Supporting Carers in General Practice Programme (SCGP). NHS Improving Quality worked with NHS England in developing the Commitment to Carers, and is co-ordinating the summits.

NHS England’s ‘Commitment to Carers’ was published following engagement with carers, charities and partner organisations. It identifies eight priorities and 37 commitments that will help the NHS to deliver the care and support carers have said they need.

The RCGP SCGP programme is funded by the Department of Health and has been running since early 2009, working to improve the support and resources available for CCGs, GPs and primary healthcare staff to enable them to increase identification and support of carers in primary care.

Sharing experiences will help us to identify what is working well. Participants will help to identify how we can start spreading the things that will really make a difference for carers. We will capture the learning and discussions from the day, which will enable us to create a set of principles of practice for the commissioning of services which will support business planning for next year, ready for publication in the autumn.

The outputs will:

• Identify what works well to support the health and wellbeing of carers

• Help us understand what needs to happen so that good practice is spread

• Promote how our health services can improve the life for carers

• Improve outcomes through commissioning

The workshops will use a variety of interactive methods to actively engage with the audience. Scenarios and simulations will be used to ensure that all areas of the carer’s journey have been explored by the end of the four workshops.

Invites

To make these events successful we need to ensure we have invited the right people and we need your help to do this. We ask regional leads and carer organisations to help identify invitees in their regions and distribute invitations through their networks. We have 80 (100 in London) places available for each event. These have been allocated to ensure a spread across participants of non-statutory carer organisations and carers and the statutory health and care sector to include representatives from CCGs, CSUs, Health and Wellbeing boards and providers.

Case studies

Examples of good practice are needed prior to the event and are being sought through the carers organisations, RCGP GP champions and regional/area teams. These examples will provide each event with evidence of good practice on which to base the agenda. This will allow us to bring the examples to life specifically for each of the regions and help to identify the key principles of practice.

We would like a variety of case studies to show the diversity of carer experience to illustrate the breadth of practice, for example to include issues of people living in rural areas and those who are traditionally seldom heard. We are particularly interested to include good practice that can demonstrate an impact on health.

We have created a template to help ensure consistency when gathering examples of good practice, which is attached with this briefing. If case studies already exist in a different format, or if it is easier NOT to use the template, please do go ahead and submit the information however you see fit.

When submitting examples it would be helpful to cover the following points along with contact details:

Organisation

Key contact name

Role

Telephone

Email

 What did you hear from carers that led to this piece of work/service?  Describe your service (how long has the service been running?)  What impact has this had on:

o Carers:

o Staff and or o the organization

 How is the work funded / commissioned?

 Is this a rural or urban service (would it be transferable)?

 Has this work been spread or replicated anywhere else?

 How has the service been evaluated - is there a measure for success?

 Is there anything we haven’t captured that you would like to tell us about?

Please send all examples of good practice to Barbara.zutshi@nhsiq.nhs.uk by Tuesday 3 June 2014

These summits are a collaboration between national, regional and local teams in NHS England, NHS Improving Quality, the Royal College of General Practitioners, Carer organisations and Carers, to ensure that we work together to improve carer experiences.
