Stunning seven foot elephant cake the main attraction at food festival

A CLITHEROE baker gave food lovers a sight they will never forget after creating a seven foot elephant cake.

Rose Dummer, also known as Rosie Cake-Diva, created the edible treat to mark the 10th anniversary of the Bolton Food Festival and was inspired by the elephant statues around the town.

The 250kg cake took 700 hours to make and was covered in 150kg of icing and 30kg of white chocolate ganache.

And after all the painstaking hours which went in to designing and making the elephant - dubbed ‘Kimmy’ - Rose said the positive feedback she received made it all worthwhile.

“The reaction has been fantastic,” she said. “When I was in other parts of the market I heard people saying nice things about it and asking other people if they’d seen it, which was really good.

“I actually didn’t mind seeing it cut in to. The worst thing you can hear as a cake maker is people saying the cake is too nice to cut. If you go to all that trouble to make a cake and nobody eats it you go and cry in a corner!

“I really enjoyed the whole experience. It’s been a dream job for me.”

The cake was first cut on Saturday by Masterchef judge John Torode but was then pieced back together so TV celebrity chef James Martin could put his knife through it on Sunday.

Mr Torode said: “It was delicious. When you look at how many cakes there are within the cake, it is like a cake masterpiece.”

Almost completely edible, the cake was dished out to visitors and market traders and the final pieces were due to be sent to charity Urban Outreach yesterday.

Since taking up commercial baking around four years ago Rose, who was the Army Air Corp’s first female helicopter pilot, has been commissioned to create life-sized cakes.

Her work has included creating a life-size Grenadier Guardsman and two of the Christian Grey character from Fifty Shades of Grey.
