Put that yoga class on hold –there's a new stress-buster in town. And apparently, what we all really need to do to restore a sense of calm this time is to copy the French and invest in a colouring book for adults. These are currently proving so popular with women across the Channel that they're even outselling cookery books. Qui savait?

One particular volume alone, Secret Garden: An Inky Treasure Hunt and Colouring Book, by Johanna Basford, has sold more than 350,000 copies – and it's a craze that is slowly but surely taking the UK's Etsy set by storm, with sales of cool colouring books booming and Facebook groups dedicated to the pastime.

Examples range from pictures of landscapes and pencil drawings of heart-throbs to the sort of intricate patterns that make you see double; the idea being that concentrating on colouring in will have a meditative effect and free your life of stress. There is even anecdotal evidence that Caran d'Aching off a few of these pictures can help to cure headaches.

My Cousin like the adult colouring books, she say they help her relax and unwind.

It has not worked. Yesterday I completed one and a half pages, and the completed page looked lovely but my hands were very painful from arthritis.
I was using pencil crayons so I reckon I will have to try pastels or go back to water colour.
It really hurt me to use crayons.

They sell really fat felt tip pens for art, they may be worth a try Wendy, I have some & find them really easy on my hands - I have the same problem

I have a dot to dot book that I do every know and then, but I bit tricky when the numbers of the dots go up to over 300 !

I had to give up my colouring because of the arthritis pain in my wrist.
Today from w h smith they had a special offer of colouring pens. Reduced by 50%
These are much easier for me, so I am back doing my colouring.

Irene bought me one last year, but like you, I couldn't do it because of the pain in my thumb. I may give it a go now the steroid is working & I can grip without pain

I had a go today at the Forum in Norwich. As part of Makers Month they had a colouring corner supposedly for grown-ups only. They had some printed sheets and felt-tips, I found the using the felt tips very easy, much better than pencils or crayons.

PS I was rather "naughty" and brought a few sheets home (four) to carrying on colouring in
