BBC TV News reaches 60-year milestone

There is no shortage of television news to be found on UK screens. Switch on the TV and there is any number of 24-hour rolling news channels or bulletins at all times of the day.

But on 5 July 1954 the BBC was preparing for its first TV news bulletin to go live.


Richard Baker read the very first news bulletin but he did not appear in person for another three years

The first broadcasts were sober affairs: there were no personality newsreaders and the format resembled a radio bulletin over still pictures.

Richard Baker was the first to read the news, but it would be another three years before he would actually be seen on screen as there were concerns a human face would detract from the serious business of the news.

September 1960 saw the first 10 O'Clock News and in the following years there was a growth in news programmes - World at One, News Review, Newsreel.

When did you first get a tv?
My dad was adamant that we were not getting one, until 1960, when he gave in & we rented one from Rediffusion, it was operated by a white switch on the wall to change channels.

When we got married in 1694, we had no money & tv was not a priority, so we did without for a couple of years. When my 4 year old niece visited  us for the first time, she could not believe we didn't have a tv & looked all over the house to see if we had hidden it!!

I think it was 1958 my parents rented our first TV and the only TV channel then was BBC and of course it was black and white with a screen size of about 14 inches in a large wooden cabinet, Anglia region ITV started here in 1959.

My grandparents rented their first TV for the Coronation.
We had a tower in the garden.  Honestly, it was massive, but we lived in a dip and without this great contraption, there was no signal.
Grandma used to have the neighbours in on a Saturday night and they would bring crisps and a guinness.
