You got me really puzzled Honey ./ never heard of a donkey stone so I looked it up on the 'net and found this site
http://www.manchester-forum.co.uk/index ... pic=5433.0My first thought was to check out eBay, nothing on there, also checked Lakeland, and Thorns websites (Thorns is a local hardware sho). Nothing on either, but I am popping into the city today so I will pop into Thorns and see if they stock them at all -it is that sort of shop, if they don't have them, they will maybe know where to get one...

Sorry, haven't seen one for years Honey, but look for a proper old-fashioned ironmongers, who may stock them but I am not sure that they are still manufactured.
It is a Northern thing Liz , usually from Mill Towns, like Burnley, every housewife used to sweep and mop their outside path and doorstep and then went over the step with the donkey stone, this was done on a weekly basis. My mum always used a white one, but they also had yellow ones. I think we used to get ours from the rag & bone man in exchange for old clothes.

I found a video on u tube you might find interesting but had to delete it immediately because it says it is copyright at the end.
However, if you go on u tube and search for donkey stones
there is a short video on there that a university did about donkey stones which you might enjoy.

Honey, if you could embed the video from Youthube that is ok.
The copyright is so that no one takes the film and makes out it is there film.
If they wish to keep the film sort of private they would disable embedding.
Thank you for finding this, I have found it really interesting and I hope everyone will watch this excellent film.

Interesting.
Here in Norfolk I remember our door step was painted with red cardinal paint and then polished with red cardinal polish.
