The extent of the nuisance call menace plaguing the city is laid bare in a new survey which identifies Norwich as the second worst hotspot in the UK.
The research found that nearly three quarters of households are receiving up to 15 calls on their landlines per week, with payment protection insurance (PPI) calls as the biggest culprits.
And today Age UK Norwich warned that the calls could be more than irritating: older people could be alarmed by them and regularly contacted the charity for advice.
The survey, conducted by YouGov, found that in Norwich 71pc of those polled received PPI calls, followed by automated marketing calls (67pc) and sales calls (63pc) in the last 12 months.
Those taking part were almost unanimous in finding the unsolicited calls a nuisance. Just 1pc said they did not find them annoying, with 2pc saying they were “not very annoying”. Almost a third (31pc) said the calls left them feeling “stressed”, “bullied” or “vulnerable”.
Susan Ringwood, chief executive of Age UK Norwich, said: “It’s certainly something we’re aware of, and people come into our advice and information service about whether they’re being scammed or exploited in some way.
