Does anyone else have problems with tin openers, I have a lot of problems with them working right and my husband reckon it's because I'm cack handed, I've even tried an electric tin opener but some how I make a pigs ear of it.

I have now cleared up the mess I made in the kitchen after contents spilled out.  xmas19

My mum and I both have problems with tin openers, have tried all sorts but it makes no difference. gips

I have problems as well, but I find the one I use the most is a 99p one from the 99p store

I'll have to try one of those Wendy, 99p is good as they don't last me to long.

I am right handed & still  struggle with them, I have never found an "ideal one"

is the 99p one  what they call the butterfly opener, some times i have a job with that one if the tin is tough  i use a small spoon through the hole in the "butterfly for extra leveredge as my wrists seem so weak sometimes.

why have tins anymore that need opening?
surely the new foil packs that just need tearing and are just as good at preserving food would be better  than tins.
perhaps more eco friendly too.

I wanted a swanky looking one instead of the plain metal butterfly opening one that my mum always has too.

I have had 3 and all broke within weeks (only got them from poundland but still!!) So I went back to good old metal one which is still going.

I'm sure it pulled it's tongue out when I dug him out of the back of the draw as if to say told you so!!!

I've brought a cheap tin opener from poundland so we shall see if that works.

Don't talk to me about  an56 tin openers, I brought a new one just like the picture Wendy, tried for 20 mins to open tin and then had to resort to old one and argue with that, I think I'm going to look on ebay for one of the old type one's my mum use to use, never had any problems with them.

does a sort of butterfly wing come out on the one you bought?
It does on mine, and is really easy.

I try to buy tins which have those pull rings on, but I have always been extra careful since a former work colleague of mine used one and it broke of and he needed up nearly cutting through a tendon in his hand. If they are really tricky I hold it in one hand and use a pair of pliers to bend the ring back.

For the tins that don't I have one of those that you put on then turn a handle, a bit like the one in the pic. In the past I have had a battery one that you just put on the top of the tin, then press a button then it does it all itself, but they are expensive...

.. and even more inconvenient when you go to open a tin and fine that the batteries have run out! sp0

PS I had to take a tin of corned beef back to Marks the other week as I couldn't open it - even tried the pliers  trick to get a bit more leverage -

That one is like mine Wendy, but sometimes I have difficulty aligning the blades with the rim. A lot of cans now have ring pulls now, but doesn't always help, as the ring usually comes off in your hand without the lid!!!!!
I like the battery ones, they are really good, but I find that they stop working after a while despite replacing batteries & as Liz says they are costly
I find corned beef  & sardine tins lethal & always end up bleeding

It's just like the one in the picture Wendy, I'm afraid the air was blue here teatime, it's lucky I've not thrown it out of the window.

I've now got about 4 or 5 tin openers in drawer and an electric tin opener that was my mums and I can't even open a tin of flaming beans.

Ring pulls.................. don't even go there.

i have found that if the cans have paper on them i tear it off and it can be easier than getting the paper jammed in the cutting part.

Do you open the ring pulls with a cloth, I find it is much easier to grip with some cloth?
Does your tin opener, Maureen, have wings that come out on the sides?
If not then I will have to take a photo of mine.

It's like the one in the picture you put on.
My problem with ring pulls is I pull them off before tin is opened.

Why can't everything be in a jar, I can open them no problem.

My tin opener saga continues................. I've just managed to open a tin but had to be a contortionist to do it with being left handed, now having opened a tin the tin opener is still attached to the tin and can't get it off so goodness knows what I've done.

Oh Mo you must be starving by now!!!

I always use a butter knife to prise uo the ring as it tends to come off in my hand too. I don't eat corned beef in a tin any more as I wreck it then cut myself. Such a shame as it is lovely out of the tin for corned beef hash

I managed to remove tin opener from tin without cutting myself to ribbons.

Thank you Wendy but look at the cost for a left handed one compared to one from £1 shop, it's expensive being a lefty, I even have to buy a double edge carving knife as the norm doesn't have cutting edge on correct side for me.

Jane I can manage to open a tin of corned beef with those little keys but can't open a tin of peas  gips

I will do your peas if you do my corned beef!!!
