Obese drivers, who are so heavy they cannot walk more than 50 metres, are being issued with Blue Badges, it has emerged.

The permits, which are supposed to help the disabled, are being issued to people because they struggle to use public transport.

At least half a dozen such permits were recorded in Britain in the last three years, according to figures obtained in a Freedom of Information request by MailOnline.

But there were fears the number could be far higher because many councils do not keep records of the reasons for handing out the badges.

Tam Fry, of the National Obesity Forum, said: "I don’t think councils should be giving these passes out as the obesity problem gets worse

Ann I would ring up about Stan's badge. It took me a couple of weeks to get mine and I had to then collect it from my local library in person!

I don't think they send reminders for renewal now, Bill didn't get one  for his. I agree Ann, a diet plan & exercise programme would be more appropriate

They don't send reminders for blue badges, in this area if you apply a couple of months before it run out you may be lucky to get it through on time.
