A couple of years ago I realised that Jean’s sense of balance was on its way out so I had the kitchen and front room (Lounge to you posh people down south) altered and installed tiled floors ready for her being confined to a wheelchair. When the tiles were first installed Jean developed a habit of sitting in her chair and constantly scraping her right foot along the tiles leaving scuff marks. No problem – just polish the tiles now and then and all was ok.
Over the last few months her manner has changed from being happy and content to smiling and giggling less. In an effort to cheer her up I started playing Trad Jazz CD’s, you know the sort of thing – Kenny Ball and his Jazz men, Acker Bilk, Bix Beiderbeck and the like. It had the desired effect and cheered her up no end.
There is a down side though – she has stopped scraping her foot on the floor but started foot tapping even when the CD’s are not on.
Its ok at first but after 10 hours of constant tapping it was starting to drive me up the wall. Bearing in mind that she needs substantial shoes to walk (slippers were out of the question), I was left with 2 alternatives:-
1) super glue some bathroom sponge to the soles of her shoes or,
2) take one shoe off as she only taps with her right foot.
I went for No2 – peace at last.
