Clitheroe Bonfire Night celebrations

FIREWORKS will fill the night sky and Guy Fawkes will get a warm reception when Clitheroe stages its annual Bonfire Night celebrations on Saturday.

This year the public event falls on November 5th and the bonfire will be lit in the Castle Grounds at 6-30 p.m.

As in past years, the event is organised as a combined effort between the Rotary Clubs of Clitheroe, Ribblesdale and Pendle View, together with Clitheroe Lions Club and Clitheroe Round Table. They also have continuing support and co-operation from the Police, Fire Brigade and St John’s Ambulance.

Hanson’s Cement has again sponsored the event and made a substantial contribution towards the professional fireworks display. With public safety paramount, the services of a highly professional and experienced pyrotechnics contractor are being used. The sponsorship also enables all the proceeds from the event to go to good causes. This year’s chosen charities are Crossroads Care and Life Education.

Crossroads Care is Britain’s leading provider of support for carers and the people they care for. Money raised by Saturday’s event will go to the local branch of Crossroads to support carers in the Ribble Valley.

Life Education is an important charity which provides valuable education to local children regarding a number of health-related topics, including the effects of the use of drugs and alcohol.

Last year the organisers were able to donate more than £12,000 to the chosen charities and they hope to beat that this year.

For safety’s sake, the public are asked not bring their own fireworks, firewood or sparklers to the event, where additional attractions include a hog roast, pasties, hot and cold drinks, music and the sale of fluorescent and illuminated toys for children and young at heart.

Some entrances to the Castle will not be accessible for safety reasons. The two entrances being used are the Parson’s Lane and Eshton Terrace entrances. Collecting boxes will be available at both entrances for visitors to make donations and those attending are asked to give as generously to support these local charities while enjoying a fun-filled family evening out.

Local primary schools have been invited to make a Guy for the bonfire, with cash prizes for the best Guy.
