An inspiring local singing group in East Ayrshire, made up of people with dementia and their carers, have launched a charity CD single for Christmas. The group, called Musical Minds, worked closely with internationally renowned tenor singer, Martin Aelred, to produce a double A-side CD for Christmas 2011. The songs featured are ‘If We Hold on Together’ by Diana Ross and ‘Those Were the Days (My Friend)’.

Local Alzheimer Scotland Dementia Advisor, Katy Hawker, who helped to set up the Musical Minds group, said,

“It has been a wonderful opportunity to work with Martin Aelred and to be able to release this single. The Musical Minds group has greatly enjoyed working on this project and they hope to go on to even bigger and better things in the future.

This would not have been possible without the support of the Provost of East Ayrshire, Stephanie Young, Lady Kay Hamilton and Martin Aelred, all of whom will be attending our launch.”

Singing has been shown to have a highly beneficial impact for people with dementia, both in terms of mental stimulation and social interaction. Alzheimer Scotland operates several singing groups for people with dementia, their carers and their families, all over the country.
