David Cameron promises Olympic Games health ‘legacy’

David Cameron is to announce the setting-up of a £10m science research centre on the site of the Olympic drug-testing laboratories.

The “phenome” facility will allow better understanding of physical characteristics such as hair and eye colour, as well as diseases including dementia and diabetes.

The prime minister will say the UK can “lead the world” in the research field.

He will address 500 leading figures from the global health industry.

A 20% “fat tax” on unhealthy food and drink could help cut the number of people suffering from obesity and heart disease.

Such a move should be combined with subsidies on healthy foods such as fruit and vegetables, academics from bmj.com said.

The group released their findings ahead of the 65th World Health Assembly in Geneva where prevention and control of non-communicable diseases will be key issues for discussion.

A FULL-TIME carer from Hadlow has launched a furious broadside at Kent County Council’s social services department over its lack of support for carers.

Eight years ago Philip Homewood, of Hope Avenue, gave up a career as a chef and baker to look after his 75-year-old father Bill, who received £160-a-month to pay for care.
