BROMLEY Mencap has scooped a national award for a scheme which helps carers who also need to be cared for.

The charity for people with learning disabilities has been running the Mutual Carers project for nine years to support older parents with disabled adult sons and daughters who themselves have now become elderly and disabled.

Twenty-five families a year benefit from help including respite breaks, emergency planning, cookery classes, welfare benefits checks and help with medical appointments.

And its efforts were recognised at the 2011 Guardian Public Service Awards when it won the service delivery award for carers, families and communities.
