‘Unacceptable’ that families ‘not told of resuscitation plans’

Thousands of people in England have had “do not resuscitate” orders imposed on them without their family’s knowledge, an audit of dying patients suggests.

One in five families were not consulted where doctors had decided not to revive their relative, a sample study by The Royal College of Physicians found.

Hospitals must “do better”, and it was “unforgivable” not to tell families, report author Prof Sam Ahmedzai said.

NHS England said end-of-life care had improved, but more could be done.

A “do not resuscitate” order (DNR) means medical staff will not attempt to bring the patient back to life if they stop breathing or their heart stops.

First of a new kind of care village set to open

A new care village – the first of its kind in East Anglia – is opening its doors to residents from Monday.

It’s like a fancy hotel complex with a hairdressers, bar, cafe, shop and restaurant set in landscaped gardens but it’s actually made up of 92 care flats and a dementia home.

Four council care homes built in the 1970s in Norwich are shutting and the residents transferring to Bowthorpe Care Village on the outskirts of of the city.

New scheme to benefit hundreds of unpaid carers in Norwich and South Norfolk

Hundreds of unpaid carers are to benefit from a pilot scheme that aims to provide them with individual support in their own homes.

It will see carers in Norwich and South Norfolk receive one-to-one coaching in order to give them more confidence to look after an older person.

The free programme, which is being delivered by the Carers Agency Partnership (CAP), is available to people who care for someone over the age of 65 in their own home.

And people are now being invited to register with the scheme.

Kevin Vaughan, CAP manager, said: “Carers often tell us that they feel thrown in the deep end when it comes to looking after an elderly relative or friend at home.
