An arson-hit community centre was given a helping hand on Friday when a carers group donated a computer.

The Phoenix Centre in Mile Cross was partially destroyed in a fire on Saturday, December 15. But a flood of donations has meant the Mile Cross Road community centre has quickly got back on its feet.

The PC was donated by Wendy Maxwell from Hellesdon, who founded a website and chatroom for carers called Chill4us.

Mrs Maxwell said: “It was a real joy to give the PC to the Phoenix Centre. It was awful that such a thing should happen around Christmas. The staff are keeping cheerful through difficult times.”

The rise of the silver surfer: UK grandparents put tech on wishlist

A new survey shows that grandparents don’t want knitwear this holiday season, they want technology gifts like tablets that help them get online and keep in touch with their families.

Traditional gifts, like sweaters, socks and even books, will fail to raise a smile with the older generation this holiday season.

According to a survey of over 2000 adults conducted by YouGov for online security firm Kaspersky Lab, only 3 percent of the over-55 crowd would like socks this year and 5 percent a knit pullover, while a staggering 41 percent are holding out for a smartphone, tablet or laptop.

This is in stark contrast to the younger, traditionally tech-savvy generation who would be happy with knitwear 14 percent of UK 18-to-24-year-olds said they would like a sweater and 21 percent said they’d be happy to receive socks.

Children’s laughter, balloons and presents filled the hall of a Mile Cross community centre on Saturday – just seven days after it was attacked by arsonists.

The message from the Phoenix Centre as it hosted six-year-old Sade Woollard’s birthday party was clear – we have risen from the ashes.

Christmas lights, music and games replaced the ash, smoke and flames of last weekend when the centre was set alight and partially destroyed.

Sade’s mother, Charmain, said her daughter had been in tears during the week at the thought that her first big birthday party would be cancelled.
