Ease “poverty” of unpaid carers

A wounded military veteran’s daughter has claimed unpaid carers are being forced to skimp on food and heating because they get no help with transport costs.

Faith-Jason Robertson-Foy wants Aberdeen bus lane fine revenues used to subsidise cheap fares for those looking after family and friends.

But she says politicians and social care chiefs have failed to act because they don’t understand the poverty faced by many people in her position.

A West Norfolk councillor has called for greater government support to meet the costs of providing care for the county’s elderly population.

Norfolk County Council is due to set its budget for the forthcoming financial year on Monday, including plans for a near five per cent rise in council tax.
But, although most of that would go towards adult social care if implemented, critics say even greater funding is needed. And Clenchwarton and Lynn South representative Alexandra Kemp has written to the communities secretary, Sajid Javid, to demand extra support.

Cuts to Norfolk adult social care, which critics say could increase homelessness, agreed – by narrowest of margins.

Millions of pounds of cuts, including for spending on independent living for young and old, have been backed by councillors – by the narrowest of margins.

The decision to cut more than £11m, including more than £5m from funding for services which support vulnerable people, was today agreed by Norfolk County Council’s adult social care committee.

But an attempt by opposition councillors to stop cuts to housing support was only blocked thanks to the casting vote of Conservative chairman Bill Borrett.
